About the Banded Cotinga

The banded cotinga (Cotinga maculata) is a species of bird in the family Cotingidae. It is endemic to southeastern Brazil. Its natural habitat is tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss as its population is estimated to number between 250 and 999 mature individuals. Birds are around 20 cm long, and males are a bright blue with a black spotted back. The throat and belly are bright purple with a blue band across the chest. Females are a dull brown with some white mottling. The primaries are modified to produce a slight whir during display. The majority of the species is concentrated in the state of Bahia, with occasional records from the nearby state of Minas Gerais. It most likely once occurred in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, but has since been extirpated.

We only publish recordings we may use commercially, because this site is supported by ads. xeno-canto lists 3 recordings for this species: 2 CC BY-NC-ND · 1 CC BY-NC-SA. None of them permits commercial use, so there is no player here — the page is kept as a profile so the bird is not missing from the guide.

As soon as someone uploads a freely licensed recording, we mirror it and the player appears here.
