About the Northern Sooty Woodpecker

The northern sooty woodpecker (Mulleripicus funebris) is a species of bird in the family Picidae. It is endemic to Luzon, Marinduque, Catanduanes and the Polillo Islands in the Philippines. Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests and tropical moist montane forests. The northern sooty woodpecker was once considered conspecific with the southern sooty woodpecker and both were lumped together as Mulleripicus funebris and known simply as the "sooty woodpecker". They exhibit sexual dimorphism in which males have red facial markings. They are typically seen alone or as a pair and presumed to feed mainly on invertebrates. The breeding season is reported as March to May.

We only publish recordings we may use commercially, because this site is supported by ads. xeno-canto lists 5 recordings for this species: 5 CC BY-NC-SA. None of them permits commercial use, so there is no player here — the page is kept as a profile so the bird is not missing from the guide.

As soon as someone uploads a freely licensed recording, we mirror it and the player appears here.

Listed as recorded in Philippines in the xeno-canto catalogue.
