About the Locust Finch

The locust finch or locustfinch (Paludipasser locustella) is a species of waxbill found in south-central and south-eastern Africa. It is the only species in the genus Paludipasser. It is sometimes placed in the genus Ortygospiza. The locust finch was first formally described in 1909 by the English naturalist and entomologist Sheffield Airey Neave with the type, a subadult male, being collected at the Upper Luansenshi River, north-east of Bangweolo, Northern Rhodesia, i.e. Zambia. Neave placed it in the monotypic genus Paludipasser within the waxbill family Estrildidae, but it has also been placed in the same genus as the quailfinch, Ortygospiza.

We only publish recordings we may use commercially, because this site is supported by ads. xeno-canto lists 16 recordings for this species: 4 CC BY-NC-ND. None of them permits commercial use, so there is no player here — the page is kept as a profile so the bird is not missing from the guide.

As soon as someone uploads a freely licensed recording, we mirror it and the player appears here.

Listed as recorded in Malawi, Zambia in the xeno-canto catalogue.
