About the Olive Oropendola

The olive oropendola (Psarocolius bifasciatus) is a species of bird in the family Icteridae, the oropendolas, New World orioles, and New World blackbirds. It is found in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. It is a "spectacularly large oropendola". The olive oropendola was formally described in 1824 with the binomial Cassicus bifasciatus. For a time it was placed in genus Gymnostinops which was later merged into the current Psarocolius. The olive oropendola's further taxonomy is unsettled. As of early 2026, major taxonomic systems assign it these three subspecies: Psarocolius bifasciatus yuracares (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838) Psarocolius bifasciatus neivae (Snethlage, E, 1925) Psarocolius bifasciatus bifasciatus (Spix, 1824)
