About the Tumbes Tyrant

The Tumbes tyrant (Ochthoeca salvini) is a Near Threatened species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers. It found in Ecuador and Peru. The taxonomy of the Tumbes tyrant is unsettled. It was formally described in 1877 by Wladyslaw Taczanowski as Ochthoeca salvini. The Clements taxonomy, BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW), the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Birds of the World (which mostly uses Clements taxonomy) and AviList retain it in genus Ochthoeca. Clements and Cornell use the English name Tumbes chat-tyrant for consistency with the other members of that genus; HBW and AviList call it the Tumbes tyrant. The South American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society have long separated it in genus Tumbezia and call it the Tumbes tyrant.

We only publish recordings we may use commercially, because this site is supported by ads. xeno-canto lists 23 recordings for this species: 3 CC BY-NC-SA. None of them permits commercial use, so there is no player here — the page is kept as a profile so the bird is not missing from the guide.

As soon as someone uploads a freely licensed recording, we mirror it and the player appears here.

Listed as recorded in Ecuador, Peru in the xeno-canto catalogue.
