About the Choco Woodpecker

The Choco woodpecker (Veniliornis chocoensis) is a near threatened species of bird in subfamily Picinae of the woodpecker family Picidae. It is found in Colombia and Ecuador. The International Ornithological Committee and BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World place the Choco woodpecker in genus Veniliornis. However, starting in 2018, the American Ornithological Society and the Clements taxonomy moved all species of genus Veniliornis into genus Dryobates. All of these systems use the English name "Choco" rather than "Chocó".

We only publish recordings we may use commercially, because this site is supported by ads. xeno-canto lists 10 recordings for this species: 10 CC BY-NC-ND. None of them permits commercial use, so there is no player here — the page is kept as a profile so the bird is not missing from the guide.

As soon as someone uploads a freely licensed recording, we mirror it and the player appears here.

Listed as recorded in Ecuador in the xeno-canto catalogue.
