About the Pileated Flycatcher

The pileated flycatcher (Xenotriccus mexicanus) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers. It is endemic to Mexico. The pileated flycatcher was originally described as Aechmolophus mexicanus with the genus Aechmolophus being erected for it. What became the type specimen had been misidentified as a western wood pewee (then Myiochanes richardsonii, now Contopus sordidulus). In 1977 its original genus was merged into Xenotriccus which had been erected in 1927. The pileated flycatcher and the belted flycatcher (X. callizonus) are the only members of Xenotriccus. The pileated flycatcher is monotypic.

We only publish recordings we may use commercially, because this site is supported by ads. xeno-canto lists 48 recordings for this species: 35 CC BY-NC-SA · 13 CC BY-NC-ND. None of them permits commercial use, so there is no player here — the page is kept as a profile so the bird is not missing from the guide.

As soon as someone uploads a freely licensed recording, we mirror it and the player appears here.
